Using alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs or illicit drugs at work can have serious consequences.
They can impair judgement and coordination, or be compounded by exposure to other substances in the workplace.
Around one quarter of all workplace accidents, and 15-30% of all fatalities, involve employees under the influence of alcohol.
Employers should be encouraged to recognise that stress and working environment can increase the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
But workers have important responsibilities to stay straight at work.
CIMO's Work Place Drug & Alcohol Program promotes awareness and workplace safety through drug and alcohol education as well as linking workers with problems to appropriate treatment services.
Recent Australian research found that even a brief, two-hour training session can be extremely effective in influencing employees' attitudes and beliefs concerning work-related alcohol use.
Thus, appropriately tailored drug and alcohol education programs, delivered in the context of workplace safety and/or productivity, can be an effective method of promoting safe drinking practices among workforce participants.
